Courier Press on Dirty Politics

South Carolina: First in Treason, First in political smear campaigns. South Carolina, the state that first committed treason against the United States to defend the sacred right of some of its citizens to own other people, is also developing quite a reputation for smear politics. The Evansville Courier Press manages to comment on several smear campaigns conducted by Bush supporters without ever mentioning the name "Bush."

In 2000, South Carolina is where Bush effectively put an end to John "Weathervane" McCain’s 2000 presidential campaign. Among the highlights of that primary contest - false push polls alleging that McCain had fathered a black child out of wedlock — the speck of fact to which this apparently alludes was the adoption by McCain and his wife of a Bangladeshi child.

County tackles double dipping

In the end, they agreed to continue offering the option to employees, but not without some changes, including posting the positions for new candidates each year and making sure all retirees make just 80 percent of their last-paid salary. Essentially, the issue that is the source of debate is whether a public employee should be rehired after retiring, therefore earning a salary plus a pension on the taxpayer's dime and at the expense of younger workers trying to make their way up the ranks. ‘‘I think when your time's up, your time's up,'' said county board member Don Bishop, who also is a lieutenant in the Warren Township Police Department. TCESC Superintendent Vicki Giovangnoli, on the other hand, said the experience administrators have to offer is a reason to keep them around. ‘‘Our districts value our services because of our personnel.

Musician vies for provincial award

She says Monty Flindall, owner of the studio, has brought more than engineering talent to the project, playing drums, singing backup vocals and even adding some special effects.

Shirmont is a favorite spot for local musicians and Monty has recorded many of us, she says. I respect Monty for his musicianship, professionalism, talent and, equally important, his feel for the music and what the artist has in mind.

She credits local musicians Jim Ingram, a bassist with flare, calling him a harmony master who also writes his own songs, Colborne guitarist Keith Robertson and pianist Stephan Rapos.

I have also had the pleasure of being joined by Steve Piticco who came to the studio to play lead guitar on one of my tunes.

The Belleville guitarist, a six-time winner of the Canadian Country Music Association Guitar Player of the Year, joins Ms.

Obama and the Southern vote

But Ford's campaign has also become an object lesson of how race and politics interact in modern campaigns, especially in the South.

As the campaign of Ford's opponent was flailing, the national Republican Party ran an ad that showed a white woman claiming she met Ford at a Playboy party, ending with a flirtatious solicitation: "Harold, call me."

Leading or even in the polls up to that point, Ford's popularity dropped after the ad ran, never fully recovering. Lee said that the election didn't turn on a single ad and that the candidate had problems with negative impressions of the Ford family, a political dynasty in Memphis.

But he said the "call me" ad was part of a larger barrage of references subtly aimed at sexually charged stereotypes of black men. And he expects the same will happen to Obama.
